Currently horizontal on the sofa, cradling my cup of tea and reflecting on my first day as a trainee journalist.
Meeting my fellow students was nice, with a classic getting-to-know-you exercise of 'tell me something interesting about yourself', before we got right on with our first reporting lesson. It was interesting, engaging and our lecturer was absolutely lovely. We went through some of the things we'll be doing over the next few weeks and talked about sources of news and some basics of news writing. Obviously broken up with plenty of tea breaks. Before we finished our first day we each wrote a 60 word article. Surprisingly difficult, let me tell you. It was an enlightening little task though, proving the importance of being concise and alerting us to unnecessary information. I'm inspired to find and write my own stories, and that can only be a good thing.
Today was an insight into what the next four months will hold and too, what my life in journalism might look like. It looked exciting, exhausting and exactly what I want.
(Having said that, shorthand starts tomorrow, everything could still change).
